Inspired by this post on The Book Wars.
I love both art and the written word, so it is no surprise that I enjoy works that combine these two elements. First up is my favourite novel of all time, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick – a cross between a picture book and written novel, with alternating chapters of the story in words and pictures:
Next up, is Brian Selznick’s other work, Wonderstruck, which expands on the concept of Hugo. Instead of one story in both words and pictures, it is two stories; one in words, the other in pictures:
Third is the recent In The Shadows, a collaboration between Kiersten White and Jim Di Bartolo, a graphic novel and written hybrid in which the graphic novel portion begins after the conclusion of the written portion and extends to the present day:
Last, but not least is Kate Dicamillo’s Flora & Ulysses a comic book written word hybrid:
Do you love hybrids too? Are there any I’ve missed? I’d love to hear from you!
