Sequels

sequelsWhat makes some sequels amazing, and others bad? I know that there is no one formula that applies to all books, but I think good sequels should :

  1. Build on the previous books
  2. Be a continuation of the story
  3. Further develop either a character or an aspect of the plot
  4. Not differ too much from the previous book
  5. Not just be filler or a way to reach the end

If the first book in a series introduces a unique concept, the sequel should take that same concept a step further. If I like a book I’ll look forward to the sequel because I’ll expect to delve back into the same universe and re-unite with my favourite characters, though this is not always the case. Sometimes sequels are set in a different world, with different characters, and that’s ok too, as long as I get the same feeling I did reading the previous books.

My expectations vary depending on my enjoyment of the previous books, but the one thing that never changes is that I always want the sequel to feel like it is part of the same world. It needs to feel connected to the previous books and shouldn’t be drastically different. I expect characters to stay the same, unless their change is justified. Same with plot and world-building.

Also, there needs to be a point to having a sequel. I’m perfectly fine with novels being stand-a-lones. Sequels shouldn’t be there because, hey the first book did well so why not write more?

What do you think goes into a good sequel? ย Is there anything you don’t like about sequels? I’d love to hear from you!
