Graphic Novels / Manga

imagination

I adore graphic novels. There is just something about a story told though pictures and words that fascinates me.  They are much more imaginative than traditional books, they force me to think and leave me with a feeling of wonder.

I’ve heard people say that graphic novels do half of the work for both the writer and the reader. The writer does not have to describe the setting and the reader does not have to imagine it. I disagree. Much more detail goes into the artwork in graphic novels over fewer pages and every aspect of the scene has to fit. In a story descriptions can be much more general. For the reader, true, it requires less imagination, but a lot more thought. Many of the stories require multiple readings in order to make sense of the message and never outright explain it, leaving it up to interpretation. My favourite graphic novels are (pretty much all the ones I’ve read) :

Flight by Kazu Kibuishi

The Saga of Rex by Michel Gagne

Manga on the other hand are just super fun to read. I love Kimi ni Todoke!

What do you think about graphic novels / manga?  Do you have any recommendations?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!
